How to get funky old smell of old boxes?
I bought two antique pieces of furniture collector barn. The drawers and funky old smell. I can not put anything in them because everything that comes, comes out smelling drawers. What can you do besides the packages of envelopes? Been there, done that.
As someone who buys and sells antiques can help me with this. Take a slightly damp cloth or a microfiber cloth and put a little baking soda in it and clean inside each box, let dry, then take clean, crumpled newspaper and fill the drawers and close them up for a day or more. Open drawers Remove the paper and vacuum baking soda ANY remaining. If there is any odor left, repeat, but only newspapers and let the drawers remain closed for a week. Should be odorless. If not, you may have some mold or fungus on the inside of the drawers. You may retake a bit of damp cloth one gallon of water with 1-2 tablespoons (no more than that) and clean the inside of the drawers and let dry completely. When I say slightly damp, I mean just Water enough to feel the fabric is wet again with crumpled newspaper. Clean the inside and outside of the piece with a lint-free cloth with a little oil lemon. DO NOT use this inside drawers! You can also try a bit of freshly ground coffee in cups whole inside drawers and closed for a week and pour the coffee grounds when finished.
